The Joy of Aging Leather
While it’s important to protect your leather piece from damage (see 3. Dos and Don’ts ), everyday exposure to friction, light, natural oils, and movement are part of what allows it to age beautifully. Over time, these quiet interactions shape its tone and texture, deepening its character in a way that reflects your life and habits. We hope you enjoy this living quality of leather as your piece becomes more personal with time.

2. Leather Care

Waterproofing Leather

Prevent Water Stains and Dirt
If you plan to use your piece daily—especially if that includes outdoor use—waterproofing is an essential step. Before you begin using your item, we recommend taking the time to apply a suitable waterproofing treatment to help protect it from water spots, stains, and dirt.

Notes on Natural Effects

Light-Colored Leathers
Small dark spots may occasionally appear on the surface of light-colored leathers. This is a natural characteristic of genuine leather and not a defect.

Wax Bloom
Most leathers are treated with oils and waxes during production. When temperatures change, these can rise to the surface as a fine white powder called “bloom,” especially in leathers with higher wax content. You can simply brush it off or gently blend it back in with a cloth or your fingertips. Bridle Leather, for example, contains particularly high levels of wax and oil, giving it the distinctive frosted look that makes this traditional leather so prized.

3. Leather Dos and Don’ts

Beyond routine maintenance, knowing how to correctly handle your leather pieces in everyday life is essential. Here’s a quick guide to the key tips.

How to Store Leather Items
If leather products aren’t stored properly, they can become misshapen or even develop mold. Discover the key do’s and don’ts of leather storage, so you can keep your pieces in their best condition for years to come.

Handling Soft Leathers
Soft leathers are delicate and can be easily scratched by sharp objects, such as keys or even fingernails. While minor marks may blend into the surface over time, they often remain to some degree. Handle your pieces carefully, and avoid contact with sharp items when carrying them in a bag.

Avoid Overstuffing
Overloading compartments, card slots, or pockets can cause the leather to warp.

Preventing Discoloration
To preserve the natural texture of the leather, Tsuchiya Kaban pieces are not treated with color-fixing processes. As a result, it’s important to avoid excessive friction, moisture, and light. Water or rubbing can dull the color, and dyes may transfer onto light-colored clothing, so please be mindful of what your items come into contact with. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or indoor lighting can also cause fading. The same precautions apply to metal fixtures, such as zippers and clasps.

4. Repair

Thoughtfully crafted by our in-house artisans in Japan, Tsuchiya Kaban pieces are designed to last for years, and even decades. Even with significant wear, many customers choose to continue using their trusted leather companions rather than replace them—which is why we view repair as a natural part of the journey. Should your item ever need attention, our expert craftspeople are ready to provide a smooth and seamless repair experience.
